The Norfolk City Council is just starting conversations about whether they should use ranked choice voting (RCV) for their future elections. Using RCV for local elections rewards candidates who are able to build consensus and allows voters for more fully express their preferences.

Ranked choice voting is a better way to run local elections. Tell your City Council member that you support RCV and encourage them to take action.

Why just the City Council?

The option to adopt RCV for local legislature elections (City Council or Board of Supervisors) comes from HB1103, a bill passed through the General Assembly in 2020.

The bill created a pilot program, through which any locality could decide to try Ranked Choice Voting for their elections. The bill is narrowly focused and does not include an option to use RCV for elections for School Board or other constitutional offices.

If localities try RCV and like it, they can encourage the General Assembly to expand the pilot program to include other offices.

What else can I do to help pass RCV in Norfolk?

  1. Invite us to speak to your group! If you’re a member of an organization that would like to learn more about Ranked Choice Voting, let us know! We would be happy to provide a speaker.
